Usage:
Express an obligation or necessity to do something = ‘must’ or ‘have to’ in English

- The use of -아/어야 되다 is more commonly used than  -아/어야 하다

-아/어야 되다 has 2 negative forms:
(1) -지 않아도 되다 = not necessary to do something
(2) -(으)면 안 되다 = prohibition of some behavior

Verbs ending in vowel ㅏ or ㅗ + 아야 되다/하다:
앉다 → 앉아야 되다/하다
보다 → 봐야 되다/하다
가다 → 가야 되다/하다

Verbs ending in vowel other thanㅏ or ㅗ + 어야 되다/하다:
기다리다 → 기다려야 되다/하다
읽다 → 읽어야 되다/하다
배우다 → 배워야 되다/하다
*쓰다 → 써야 되다/하다
*자르다 → 잘라야 되다/하다
*듣다 → 들어야 되다/하다

하다 verbs → 해야 되다/하다:
공부하다 → 공부해야 되다/하다
운동하다 → 운동해야 되다/하다




Examples

1. 내일 시험이 있어요. 그래서 공부해야 돼요.
I have an exam tomorrow. So I must study.

2. 여자 친구 생일이라서 선물을 사야 돼요.
It’s my girlfriend’s birthday, so I have to buy her a present.

3. 다음 주에 기말 시험을 봐서 오늘부터 공부해야 돼요.
I will take a final exam next week, so I have to study from today.

4. 취직 면접이라서 정시에 꼭 있어야돼요.
I must be on time since it is a job interview.

5. 내일 시간 있으면 같이 쇼핑할까요?
- 미안해요. 내일 부모님이 한국에 오셔서 공항에 가야 돼요.
If you have time tomorrow, shall we go shopping?
- I am sorry. My parents are coming to Korea Tomorrow, so  I have to go to airport.

6. 여름에 제주도에 가려고 해요.
- 비행기 표를 예약했어요? 사람이 많아서 예약해야 돼요.
I am planning to go to Jeju in this summer.
- Did you book a plane ticket? A lot of people will go, so you must book your ticket in advance.

7. 어제 왜 회사에 안 왔어요?
- 몸에 너무 안 좋아서 병원에 가야 됐어요.
Why didn’t you come to school yesterday?
- My body wasn’t feeling well, so I had to go to hospital.

8. 오늘 너무 피곤해요. 집에서 쉬어야 돼요.
I am so tired today. I have to rest at home.
