L1.01 Numbers in Korean = Sino-Korean and Native-Korean
Overview:
- There are 2 numbers systems in Korean: Sino-Korean numbers and Native-Korean numbers.
- Sino-Korean numbers are used for counting ‘modern things’ such as: phone number, bus number, height, weight, address numbers, years, month, minutes, seconds, and money.
- Native-Korean numbers are used to express times, ages, and counting units.
Sino-Korean numbers & specific usage:
일 - 1
이 - 2
삼 - 3
사 - 4
오 - 5
육 - 6
칠 - 7
팔 - 8
구 - 9
십 -10
십일 - 11
이십 - 20
백 - 100
천 -1000
만 -10000
십만 - 100000 (one hundred thousands)
백만 - 1000000 (one million)
1. Counting of large numbers is based on units of 10 thousand (1만), instead of 1 thousand (1천) as in English.
E.g. 2017030 = 이십일만 칠천 삼십
2. When a number larger than 1 begins with 1, the initial 1 is not pronounced.
E.g. 11 = 십일 ; 120 = 백 이십 ; 11050 = 만 천 오십
3. 16, 26, 36,...96 are pronounced as [심뉵, 이심뉵, 삼심뉵…]
4. “0” is pronounced as 공 or 영 (interchangeably). But when spelling phone number, 공 is used.
E.g 010-5505-5055 = 공일공 오오공오의[에] 오공오오 (in this case: 의 is pronounced as 에)

1. 교실이 몇 층이에요?
- 3층이에요.
- 3층이에요.
What floor is the classroom?
- It’s the 3rd floor.
- It’s the 3rd floor.
2. 전화번호가 뭐예요?
- 010-5159-5055예요? (공일공 오일오구의 오공오오)
What's your phone number?
- It's 010-5159-5055
- It's 010-5159-5055
3. 몇 번 버스를 타요?
- 704번 버스를 타요. (칠백 사)
What bus do you take?
- I take the bus number 704.
- I take the bus number 704.
4. 이 한국어 책이 얼마예요?
- 18,000 원이에요. (만 팔천 원)
How much is this Korean language book?
- It's 18000 won.
- It's 18000 won.
5. 몸무게가 몇 킬로그램이에요?
- 65킬로그램이에요. (육십 오)
What is your weight?
- It’s 65kg.
- It’s 65kg.
Native-Korean numbers & specific usage:
Examples of units:
개 - general thing (e.g fruit, stone, ball, pencil, candy, food...)
명 - person
마라 - animal (e.g. fish, dog, cat...)
살 - age
병 - bottle (e.g. coke, beer, wine, water,...)
잔 - cup (e.g. beer, coffee, water,...)
장 - sheet (e.g. paper, ticket,....)
권 - book
대 - machinery (e.g. car, TV, phone,...)
송이 - flower (e.g. rose,...)
한나 + 개 = 한 개 = 1 unit
둘 + 개 = 두 개 = 2 units
셋 + 개 = 세 개 = 3 units
넷 + 개 = 네 개 = 4 units
다섯 + 개 = 다섯 개 = 5 units
여섯 + 개 = 여섯 개 = 6 units
일곱 + 개 = 일곱 개 = 7 units
여덟 + 개 = 여덟 개 = 8 units
아홉 + 개 = 아홉 개 = 9 units
열 + 개 = 열 개 = 10 units
열하나 + 개 = 열한 개 = 11 units
열둘 + 개 = 열두 개 = 12 units
….
스물 + 개 = 스무 개 = 20 units
스물한 + 개 = 스물한 개 = 21 units
몇 개 = how many?
Examples:
1. 가족이 몇 명이에요?
- 우리 가족은 여섯 명이에요.
- 우리 가족은 여섯 명이에요.
How many family members do you have?
- We have a family of five.
- We have a family of five.
2. 몇 살이에요?
- 스물아홉 살이에요.
How old are you?
- I am 29 years old.
- I am 29 years old.
3. 여기 사과 두 개, 콜라 한 병 주세요.
- 네, 모두 오천 원입니다.
I will take 2 apples and 1 coke.
- Ok, it is 5000 won in total.
- Ok, it is 5000 won in total.
4. 아줌마 김치찌개 한 개 주세요.
I like to have one kimchi stew.
5. 소주도 한 병 주세요.
Give me a bottle of soju too.
