L2G08 A/V-기는 하지만, -기는 -지만 grammar = but (I think)...~express contrast but emphasize the 2nd clause

Usage:
  • Express the contrast. The speaker acknowledges the 1st clause, but emphasizes a different view or belief in the 2nd clause.
  • The latter form -기는 -지만 uses the same Verb/Adjective twice.
  • In conversation, -기는 하지만 and -기는 -지만 were shortened to -긴 하지만 and -긴 -지만. (E.g. 춤을 추긴 추지만 잘 추지 못해요.)
  • The past tense form is -기는 했지만, not -았/었기는 했지만.
Tense:

Adjective/Verb:
  • 과거 : -기는 했지만 ; -기는 -았/었지만
  • 현재 : -기는 하지만 ; -기는 -지만
  • 미래 : -기는 하겠지만 ; -기는 -겠지만

Examples:

1. 넘어져서 다친 다리는 괜찮아요?
  • 아프기는 하지만 참을 수 있어요.
Is your hurt leg since you fell ok?
  • It's hurt, I can bear it.

2. 어제 선생님이 읽으라고 하신 책을 다 읽었겠지요?
  • 읽기는 읽었지만 내용은 잘 모르겠어요.
Have you read the book that the teacher told you to read yesterday?
  • I read it but I didn't understand it well.

3. 그 옷은 너무 예쁘기는 하지만 너무너무 비싸서 못 사겠어요.
Those clothes are very pretty but I think I can’t buy it since it is very very expensive.

4. 이 음식을 먹긴 하겠지만 많이 먹지 않을 거예요.
I will eat this food but I won't eat much.

5. 어제 본 영화가 재미있기는 했지만 모두 이해하지는 못했어요.
The movie I watched yesterday was interesting but I couldn't understand all.

6. 요즘 정말 덥지요?
  • 덥기는 덥지만 에어컨이 있으니까 괜찮아요.
It is very hot these days,  right?
  • It's hot but it is ok since I have an air conditioner.

7. 유학 조건이 좋기는 좋지만 집에서 멀리 사니까 고독해요.
Study abroad is good but it is lonely because of living far from family.

8. 지금도 그 회사에 다녀요?
  • 네, 다니기는 하지만 힘들어요.
Are you still working for that company?
  • Yes, I am working but I am tired.

9. 이번 여름은 정말 덥지요?
  • 덥기는 덥지만 괜찮아요. 제 고향은 더 덥거든요.
This summer is really hot, right?
  • It's hot but it is ok. In my hometown it is even hotter.

10. 김치찌개는 맵기는 하지만 맛있어요.
Kimchi soup is spicy but it is delicious.

Comparison -지만 vs -기는 하지만

1. -지만 grammar
- The subject of both clauses can be different.
  • 언니는 키가 크지만 동생은 키가 작아요.
- Express a simple contrast (not emphasize).
  • 원룸이 편하지만 좀 시끄러워요.

2. -기는 하지만
- The subject of both clauses must be the same.
  • 언니는 크기는 크지만 너무 날씬해요.
- Use to emphasize a contrast. 1st clause: acknowledge the content; 2nd clause: emphasize a contrast view or belief
  • 원룸이 편하기는 하지만 좀 시끄러워요.
